Our Story
Canter+Veld was born on the back of a horse, where co-founders Lucy and Carla dreamed up the idea while riding through the veld — their business meetings unfolding between hoofbeats and horizon lines. What began as a shared vision became a commitment to their riding community: a fusion of premium craftsmanship and practical design, created for those who seek adventure on horseback and value timeless quality.
Meet Carla
Carla brings a lifetime of equestrian expertise and a deep love for horses to Canter+Veld. A South African Dressage rider, her journey has taken her from competitive arenas to the serene trails of the Lowveld, where she now teaches riding and leads horseback adventures.
With years of hands-on experience, Carla understands what riders truly need, gear that’s both practical and beautiful. After testing countless products, she dreamed of creating something better, trail-ready gear that reflects the elegance and spirit of the riding lifestyle.
Inspired daily by her beloved horses, Shelli and Rem, Carla brings thoughtful insight and heartfelt dedication to every product. Her eye for detail, commitment to quality, and love for the land and animals we ride alongside are woven into the very fabric of Canter+Veld.
Meet Lucy
Lucy grew up in Scotland with a love of the outdoors and a deep appreciation for nature, but it wasn't until later in life, after moving to South Africa in 2008, that horses truly became part of her story.
Living and working in the African bush around Hoedspruit, she discovered a passion for exploring on horseback and quickly realised that the best rides are often the ones that last a little longer. Now based in Plettenberg Bay, Lucy continues to spend as much time as possible in the saddle, drawing inspiration from South Africa's diverse landscapes and equestrian lifestyle.
Today, every Canter+Veld design is inspired by those experiences and thoroughly tested by Lucy and her horse, Umfolozi, whose honest feedback has helped shape every product before it reaches fellow riders.

Do all your products fit on all saddle types?
Not all of our products fit every saddle type, so it’s important to select the correct option when ordering. Please be sure to use the dropdown menu to choose your saddle style - English, Western or Trail so we can make sure your gear fits just right. If you're unsure, feel free to reach out and we’ll be happy to assist!
Where are your products made?
All of our products are proudly made in South Africa. Each piece is crafted with care by skilled local artisans, using quality materials designed to stand up to the demands of life on the trail.
Where does the name Canter+Veld come from?
We wanted to create a name that speaks to you, our equestrian community and the freedom allows. The name Canter+Veld is inspired by our love for horses and the landscapes we ride through. “Canter” speaks to the rhythm of the trail. “Veld” is the open countryside we call home.
Can I personalise my order?
Absolutely! We’d love to add a personal touch to your gear. Whether it’s a different colour leather or canvas, initials, a name or something meaningful to you, let us know what you have in mind, and we’ll do our best to make it happen. It’s all part of creating trail gear that feels truly your own.
How long does it take to process my order?
If we have your item in stock, orders are typically processed and shipped (locally) within 3–5 working days. For personalised items, please allow up to 3 weeks for personalised items, as each piece is made with extra care to ensure it’s just right for you. We’ll keep you updated along the way and let you know as soon as your order is on its way!
International Shipping, VAT & Duties
For our international customers, please note that shipping fees do not include VAT, import duties, or any additional taxes that may be charged by your country’s customs office. These costs are the responsibility of the recipient and are not covered by Canter+Veld. We recommend checking with your local customs authority to understand any applicable charges before placing your order. Unfortunately, we cannot take responsibility for any delays or fees incurred during the import process.
Do you offer gift cards?
Yes, we do! Canter+Veld gift cards are a wonderful way to treat the horse lover in your life. They're available from R500 up to R2000 and can be used across our entire trail gear range. Perfect for birthdays, special occasions or just because.
